CITY Furniture | Breast Cancer Awareness
A tribute, a mission, and a movement to end breast cancer.

The Pink Pumpkins Story

The Pink Pumpkins got their start with Doreen Koenig, who we like to call our CITY mom. Doreen was always known for her philanthropy, and one of her biggest causes was ending breast cancer. Every year before Halloween she would give out pink pumpkin buckets, as her special way to fill the community with the color of hope.

When Doreen ultimately got diagnosed with breast cancer and lost her brave battle in 2015, the Pink Pumpkins took on even more meaning. They grew to become the CITY symbol of awareness, our mission to take action and raise funds, and our loving tribute to Doreen and all those affected.

When you see a Pink Pumpkin bucket in our showrooms this October, help yourself and join us in spreading awareness.

The American Cancer Society tells us that the need for awareness is critical. Breast cancer screening rates have gone down by 87% throughout the course of the pandemic. Your support this October will help us to drive awareness, and support those impacted by breast cancer.

Pink Pumpkins

Pink Pumpkins was founded to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, as well as  to honor and remember our very own Doreen Koenig. She supported the cause, and was later diagnosed with breast cancer and subsequently lost her life fighting it, so it hits us very close to home. The name Pink Pumpkins comes from her idea to give out pink pumpkin baskets as a way to celebrate the spooky season of Halloween, as well as make people aware of the disease. Today, it is the name for our pledge to do all that we can to find a cure.

Part of what we do is raise money for the American Cancer Society throughout the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The month long campaign is design to spread awareness so that we can all stay protected and remember the seriousness of the disease. Although we give extra attention to this cause in October, you can make a donation at any time, all year long. The American Cancer Society is on a mission to free the world of cancer, so they fund and perform research, share valuable information, and keep us all informed about methods of prevention. For more than one hundred years, they have been fighting to save lives, so we partner with them to lend a helping hand. We are also one of the sponsors the for the Making Stride walk. The purpose of this event, similar to October’s awareness month is to raise funds, keep everyone safe, and help ensure we stay vigilant in our prevention efforts.

Pink Pumpkins is one of our initiatives under our 5% Giving Pledge. The Giving Pledge is our commitment to give back 5% of our annual profits. Because breast cancer has a huge impact in our community and was a huge priority to our CITY mom, Doreen, we decided to make it part of our focus.
